Things To Do in Sudbury: The Ultimate Guide

Greater Sudbury is the largest Northern Ontario city and is built on a past of major lumbering and being a world leader in nickel mining. Today, it is still coined as the ‘Nickel City’…yes, pun intended, as well as the ‘City of Lakes’. It’s a destination bursting with gorgeous murals, incredible restaurants, and scenic nature spots all around.

Outdoor Activities in Sudbury

Alex Trebek Memorial Mural

We’ll take ‘national treasure’ for $1000, Alex. You can find this ode to one of Canada’s greatest at Sudbury Secondary School along a wall facing MacKenzie Street. This is the school that Trebek attended while he lived in Sudbury himself. Ample parking is available just across the street in a public lot.

Tip: Be sure to take the short drive to Canada’s Largest Mural. It’s 74,000 square feet and is located at 28 Paris Street.

Onaping Falls and A.Y. Jackson Lookout

Situated just off Route 144 (about 30 minutes from the city) are the beautiful Onaping Falls. The falls can be admired in a few different ways, but the best and easiest is at the scenic A.Y. Jackson Lookout. You can access this lookout in a matter of minutes from the main transitway. This viewpoint also gives access to nearby trails should you choose to explore the falls even further.

The Big Nickel

Sudbury certainly is not called The Nickel City for nothing. This nine-meter replica of a Canadian nickel can be found on the grounds of Dynamic Earth and is the largest depiction of a coin in the world. It pays tribute to the city’s nickel-mining history and is certainly a ‘must-visit’.
