2023 Ottawa Summer Activities: Free & Nearly Free

From hidden swimming holes to cascading waterfalls, the list of Ottawa summer activities for 2023 is incredible.


1. Take a quick dip at The Pond in Rockcliffe

Arguably one of Ottawa’s biggest hidden gems, The Pond is a hidden swimming hole located in the body of water to the left of McKay Lake. Entrance is through the Caldwell-Carver Conservation Area signage and swimming hours run from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm all summer long.

2. Watch whitewater rafting at The Pumphouse Whitewater Course

Let your inner adrenaline sore at this hidden whitewater rafting course right downtown! That’s right. Set to the right of the Canadian Firefighters Memorial is this class 2 whitewater site. Grab a seat on the rocks and watch as local kayakers try to make their way through the crazy rapids and challenging obstacles.

3. Leave a love lock on the Corktown Footbridge

An oldie…but a goodie. Heading on a trip downtown? Spice up your walk with a detour to the Corktown Footbridge. Set above the Rideau Canal, this pedestrian-only walkway connects the Golden Triangle to Sandy Hill. Atop, there is also a section of love locks left by other couples!

4. Grab some nitrogen ice cream at Magic Molecule

Delicious ice cream and a science experiment all in one! Each cone is made right in front of you using liquid nitrogen. Some scoops even come with a warning label if you’re feeling brave enough to try. A trip here is a near must on your Ottawa summer activities list.

5. Show off your skills at Charlie Bowins Skate Park

Unleash your inner Tony Hawk at Ottawa’s favorite city skatepark. Featuring elements for both beginner and intermediate skaters including ledges, flat banks, quarter pipes, rails, hips, and manual pads.

6. Build your own rock sculpture at Remic Rapids Park

Take in the existing balanced rock sculptures, or try to compose one of your own. This project originally started thanks to a local artist over 30 years ago. He has since been upkeeping these displays every summer attracting many onlookers and contributors.

7. Escape the city for a minute at Petrie Island Beach

Spend a day at ‘Ottawa’s best beach’ located on Petrie Island. Just 25 minutes from downtown, this stretch of golden coastline sits at the east end of Orléans. On-site you will find ample parking, lifeguards, washrooms, a canteen for snacks, and a water fountain.

8. Attend one of the many festivals in Ottawa

9. See Ottawa from a whole new light on Alexandra Bridge

Ever walk between two provinces? Visit Quebec and Ontario within 10 minutes when crossing the Alexandra Bridge! Spanning nearly 100 feet in height, this bridge has a comfortable pedestrian walkway allowing for bikers and those on foot to cross over. It also happens to be one of the best spots to catch an Ottawa sunset.

10. Pick your own berries at Shouldice Berry Farm

Load up for your desserts, summer picnics, or sangria at these pick your own (PYO) strawberry and raspberry farms. Choose from three locations including Barrhaven (raspberries can only be picked here), Bells Corners, and Nepean.

11. Snap some pictures at the cascading Princess Louise Falls

A piece of magic just outside of the city. This scenic spot is very easily accessible, family-friendly, and close to nearby trails.

12. Adventure from New Edinburgh to Rideau Falls at Stanley Park

Whip out your bicycle, rollerblades…or anything with wheels. This beautifully paved pathway through Stanley Park to Rideau Falls is one smooth ride filled with great views and friendly neighbors.

13. Escape to a fairy paradise at Dominion Arboretum 

Covering 64 acres of land, the arboretum is home to lookouts, gardens, flowers, canal views, and trails. All of which, makes it one of the most perfect Ottawa summer activities for picnic-goers, Instagram sessions, and those looking to escape the city for a little bit.

14. Stock up on local favorites at Ottawa Farmers’ Market

Shop local fare all summer long at locations all across Ottawa. This summer’s schedule is as follows:

  • Lansdowne Summer Market is every Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm beginning May 7th, 2023.
  • Westboro Market is every Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm beginning May 20th, 2023.
  • Orléans Market is every Thursday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm beginning May 25th, 2023.
  • Barrhaven Market is every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm beginning May 28th, 2023.

15. Picnic in Major’s Hill Park

Nothing but good food and good vibes. Load up your picnic basket with local Byward Market goodies and enjoy the sprawling greenspace and beautiful city views at Major’s Hill Park. Here are some of the best picnic-approved Byward Market shops:

16. Feast of one best poutine spots in the city at Lou Fast Food

Something about food truck poutine in the summer just hits different. Say hello to crispy fries, squeaky cheese curds, and piping hot gravy. Lou Fast Food is located in Centretown on the corners of Kent and Slater and on Queen and Metcalfe.

17. Enjoy the sunset views behind Supreme Court

Tucked behind one of Ottawa’s biggest tourist sites, yet still one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Here you can enjoy sweeping views of the Ottawa River and Parliament Hill as the sun sets over the city. This also happens to be one of the best spots to catch fireworks in Ottawa during Canada Day and the annual summer events at Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy.

18. Escape to your own beach paradise at Mooney’s Bay

Escape to golden sand, volleyball fun, and slushies on the beach at Mooney’s Bay! Located just 15 minutes from downtown, this is one of the ultimate Ottawa summer activities. Compared to other beaches in the city, this one certainly attracts a younger, lively crowd. On-site you will also find lifeguards, a snack shack, change rooms, washrooms, BBQ pits, and a fitness park.

19. Grab a coffee or bite at one of ByWard Market’s hidden squares

Escape from the hustle and bustle and unwind with a good coffee or cocktail in Clarendon Lane. This hidden Byward Market courtyard is sprinkled with delicious local restaurants and cafes. Favorites include Planet Coffee, Clarendon Tavern, and Oz Kafe.
