8 Downtown Ottawa Photo Spots That Will Up Your Instagram Game

Are you looking to up your Instagram game? Do you feel like you’ve already photographed the whole city? Are you tired of seeing the same photos popping up over and over again on your feed? I’ve got you covered. Here are 8 unique Downtown Ottawa photo spots that are sure to grab attention.

1. Laurier and Elgin Intersection

Where: At the crosswalk of Laurier Avenue and Elgin Street on the same side of the street as Confederation Park. Aim to use one building as a focal point and the others as an awesome cityscape backdrop.

When to Shoot: Anytime. Golden Hour as the sun is just setting tends to produce some great shadowing- but its location is great to shoot any time of the day.

2. Milano Pizza Plaza

Where: Situated along Dalhousie Street between York Street and George Street sits an unexpectedly full shot. Aim to stand across the street from the plaza and frame in the backdrop of seemingly endless condo buildings.

When to shoot: Anytime.

3. Bank and Albert Intersection

Where: This whole intersection is great for capturing the downtown hustle and bustle. Aim to point across the street towards 109 Bank Street for a great shot.

When to shoot: If you’re aiming for a hustle and bustle style shot then shooting during regular business hours and avoiding weekends is ideal.

4. Mackenzie King Bridge

Where: On the Mackenzie King Bridge at the Rideau Centre over Nicholas Street. Aim to face towards the OAG for a great combination of old, new, and ultra-modern architecture all in one shot.

When to shoot: Technically year-round, but winter shots make this spot look very cozy and blue.

5. Library and Archives Canada

Where: Just out front sits the lovely ‘Secret Bench of Knowledge’ display. This is great for both far away and close-up shots. There is a great deal of hand-carved notes in the sculpture that makes for a great close-up capture.

When to shoot: This area is not very well lit so you are best to shoot here during the day.

6. Slater and Lyon Intersection

Where: This location is high-rise central. Practically anywhere you point your camera is a solid angle!

When to shoot: Anytime.

7. Elgin and Cooper Interserction

Where: Aim to face North on the right side of the road for the brightest shot. Use the nearby businesses storefronts and lights to accentuate your capture.

When to shoot: This can be shot at any time, but at dusk and night the businesses bright lights really tend to enhance the shot. As well as that, the nightlife adds a nice touch.

8. Clarendon Lane Courtyard

Where: Aim for the intersection of George Street and Clarendon Lane. Walk through the little pathway, follow the cobblestone, and you’re there! 

When to shoot: During the day is best to get a full and concise capture. However, the area is very well lit with string lights at night and makes for a great European-style shot.
