The Top Ottawa Winter Activities That Combine Festive, Fun, and Free

The best things in life are free, and Ottawa winter activities are no exception.

Walk, skate, snowshoe, and ski through Ottawa’s winter wonderland with these fun and free adventures.

Skating

When considering all Ottawa winter activities, ice skating is without a doubt the most looked forward to. Whether you are a local or just visiting, having a pair of freshly sharpened skates is a near necessity. Ottawa is often dubbed the coldest capital city in the world. With that, finding exciting and free places to skate is very easy.

The largest skating rink in the world.

Many opt for the 7.8km long world-famous Rideau Canal, being the largest rink on the planet. Although this is a unique experience in its own, many choose this route for its sheer convenience. When completely frozen, this skate-way runs through the entire downtown core of Ottawa all the way from Parliament Hill to Little Italy with rink accesses all throughout. In addition, it’s also equipped with a range of rest stops, classic Canadian eateries, and fire pits to warm up at all throughout- and right on the ice. With that, it acts as an incredibly spacious and convenient location to hop onto a rink regardless of where you are situated.

Other outdoor skating rinks in Ottawa.

The Rideau Canal is always a staple, but if you are looking for a quieter area to glide, there are also plenty of other unique skating spots in the city and surrounding areas to take advantage of. You can view an interactive map of some of the best here.

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing.

Yes, you read that right. It’s no secret that Ottawa gets a lot of snow…like a lot. So why not make as much use of it as possible? Enjoy some cardio with a view with Ottawa’s many snowshoeing and cross-country skiing routes- right in the heart of the city.

Britannia Winter Trail

Often dubbed the best of the best, the Brittania Winter Trail offers a well-groomed 8km trail right along the Ottawa River. Even better- it’s met with a coffeehouse at the end making for the perfect spot to re-energize and warm up with some festive treats.

Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail

If you’re looking for a trail closer to the downtown core, Sir John A. McDonald is a great option. This 16km stretch is situated along the shores of Westboro and boasts great views all around. In addition, the trail also offers two different well-groomed tracks in order to best accommodate both snowshoers’ and skiers’ separate needs.

Rideau Winter Trail

For those in the west end, the Rideau Winter Trail is a great quaint alternative. This new well-groomed trail runs along the Ottawa River and is close to a variety of nearby restaurants and bars in the Sandy Hill and Overbrook areas.

Winterlude

If you don’t believe that it’s possible to revel in -30 degree weather, then you need to experience Ottawa’s annual Winterlude. Spread across both Ottawa and Gatineau, this two-week-long event showcases the best of Canadian traditions. Enjoy real-time ice sculpture competitions and maple taffy on Sparks Street, or opt for a drink at one of the cities many ice bars. Bundle up and party at one of the many outdoor concerts, or feel like a kid again at Gatineau’s snow playground equipped with tubing and ziplining. The activities are endless and great for those of all ages.

You can view the full Winterlude schedule shortly for February 4th-21st, 2022 here.

Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne Park.

Semi-new to the Ottawa winter scene is the Ottawa Christmas Market in the Glebe. Fashioned after the ever-popular European-style markets, this annual event really turns your festive crank. Stroll through local vendors, bask in the bright light displays, sip on your favorite winter cocktails, and enjoy live entertainment every day leading up to Christmas. Talk about a fantastic addition to the roster of Ottawa winter activities.

The market is easily reachable by transit and complimentary bus tickets are even on their website. If you prefer to arrive by car, select underground parking is also available on-site. However, you’re likely better off scoping out a nearby lot. You can view their suggested parking lot alternatives here.
